Web Browser Instructions

There are 2 possible formats to choose from. If you are running an old version of IE, choose the DER format. In all other cases use the PEM format.

  • PEM (used by most browsers)
  • DER (Used by IE)
  1. Check the boxes that say:

    • "Trust this CA to identify web sites"
    • "Trust this CA to identify email users"
    • "Trust this CA to identify software developers"
  2. Click ok.

That error should no longer pop up when accessing CS department web pages. You can manage the Certificate Authority in your web browser preferences.

Mac OS X Instructions

Mac OS X has an integrated system called Keychain for certificates and passwords which is used by Safari, Mac Mail, etc. To configure Keychain to support the BYU CS Department Certificate Authority, follow these instructions:

  1. Download the file: cacert.crt and double-click on it to open it with Keychain Access.
  2. Keychain Access will ask, "Do you want to add the certificate(s) from the file "cacert.cer" to a keychain?" Select the Keychain "X509 Anchors" and click "OK."
  3. Restart Safari and Mac Mail, and all CS Department certificates will be properly recognized.
