Welcome to the CS Department Network

CS Department computers are provided to support CS courses. A large number of computers and programs are available for student use. If you become familiar with what is available, you will be more productive and have more learning opportunities.

Unfortunately the department cannot meet every student's every wish. Some students will be disappointed that their favorite program is not available. If you feel that you cannot complete your course work because a critical resource is missing, talk to your professor. Should your professor deem it necessary, he or she will submit a request to the department. However, in most cases there are multiple alternative solutions.

Resources

Computer Labs

About 200 Linux and 150 Windows computers are available to students taking CS classes. Here is a Lab Map. If you are unfamiliar with Linux, check out the Introduction to UNIX.

Working from Home

All of the Linux lab computers are available for remote access. For more information, please see the document on Accessing Lab Machines Remotely.

Email

For information on how to use email for your CS account, read the document on Email.

Printing

Two printers are available in the Talmage building for use from the labs. For more information, please go to the document on Printing.

Policies

You are responsible for abiding by department policies. Violation of these policies will result in suspension of your account and possible dismissal from the department or expulsion from BYU. Please become familiar with the Account Policies and Lab Rules.

Your account will be active as long as you are actively taking CS classes. Accounts will be disabled for students who have not taken any CS classes for more than a semester. More information is available on the Disabled Accounts document.
